Vision

Pupils will develop their sense of identity and belonging within their immediate and wider communities. Our world is enriched by a wide and profound diversity of cultures and beliefs. At Southgate we understand that human beings are strengthened and empowered by learning from each other. Pupils develop respect for others and the ability to challenge prejudice as citizens in a diverse society. We offer a safe and secure environment where ‘big’ questions can be explored whilst offering challenge and understanding. Empathy, generosity and compassion are encouraged as pupils  discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions, in local, national and global contexts, through learning about and from religions and other world views.

Curriculum Intentions

Our intention is for children to:

  • develop a sense of identity and know that they have control over their choices, and to respect a range of approaches to life
  • deepen their understanding of how to challenge discrimination
  • express their emotions constructively
  • demonstrate respect and empathy for different groups and individuals
  • broaden knowledge of their own emotions, beliefs & values & those of others who may or may not share their views.

The Journey from Semi-Formal to Formal

Pupils will begin their journey through exploring and engaging with key people around them. They will have the opportunity to explore their own beliefs and then compare them to others around them, they will then engage with a wider community and develop a sense of self within that. As they move towards more formal learning, they will broaden their knowledge of their own emotions, beliefs and values and understand that others may not share their views. They will also deepen their understanding of how to challenge discrimination, express their emotions constructively and demonstrate respect and empathy.
