Vision
Our vision for Art at Southgate School is to nurture and develop passionate and individual pupils with the creativity they can use to improve communication and engage in meaningful learning.
Pupils will have the opportunities to build on their own skills and develop these throughout their time at Southgate. Art activities support pupils self esteem, confidence and engagement to support their personal and social development. Our Art curriculum aims to positively influence their world.
Curriculum Intentions
- Children will work on their fine motor skills through a wide range of techniques including drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture. A wide variety of medium will be incorporated through the school year to ensure coverage.
- Children are offered opportunities with visiting artists to support and develop their interests in a wider variety of visual arts.
- A range of topics over a three year cycle is implemented across all pathways and this ensures a wide breadth and range of artists, medium and areas.
The Journey from Semi-Formal to Formal
As pupils move through Southgate they either enter a formal or semi-formal curriculum.
At the semi formal stages pupils experience and then actively engage with a range of creative arts (art, music, drama, design). Pupils will then develop their art and cultural knowledge by exploring multi sensory processes.
At the formal stages pupils will broaden their knowledge of processes to create a finished product and begin to analyse their own work and that of others. Pupils move forwards to then deepen their ability to express their own ideas and experiences through a range of creative processes and evaluate the work of artists.
