Southgate School

Vision

The vision of PSHE at Southgate school is to support our pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially.

Curriculum Intentions

The PSHE Curriculum will:

  • give pupils the confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up
  • provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society
  • encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community
  • be based on developing commitment, trust and love within relationships and supporting our pupils to become as independent as possible.

We use the PSHE association scheme of work which supports tailored content and teaching to meet the specific needs of pupils at different developmental stages.

The Journey from Semi-Formal to Formal

We are committed to having a person-centred approach to learning that enables our pupils to achieve key skills, independence, life skills and social communication skills. We help our pupils to understand and manage their physical and emotional development and prepare for the decisions to be made in adult life. We believe that pupils should have accurate information that relates to their needs.

The content covered at Southgate School is:

  • well-matched and inclusive to meet the needs of all pupils
  • appropriate to the age and developmental stage of our pupils and is based on what the pupils are likely to need to know
  • sequenced and progressively builds upon prior knowledge
  • includes the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, the development of skills and respectful attitudes.
