Feedback from the School Safeguarding Review (Sept 2023) by Kirklees Council Education Safeguarding Service

Safeguarding policies and processes are organised and embedded well in to school. There is a strong DSL team who understand the needs of the pupils, regular safeguarding meetings take place to discuss the more vulnerable children. The school face significant challenges given the complex needs of the pupils and the safeguarding curriculum is very much pupil focussed. Record keeping is robust, and evidence is recorded where school have sought support from partner agencies. Pupils state that they like coming to school and enjoy their time there and it is a safe place to come and learn

Safeguarding

We work in close partnership with families and other agencies to ensure pupils are safe and have everything they need to thrive. The Pastoral and Intervention Team can provide highly specialist support to pupils and their families around a wide range of issues. We can also assist families by signposting or referring to other services, when appropriate.

Our Designated Safeguarding Leaders

All our staff are highly skilled at listening to the wide range of ways our pupils communicate and are alert to any changes that may indicate a pupil needs support. We ensure the knowledge and skills of all staff are exemplary through regular training and updates.

The specialist curriculum gives pupils the skills to communicate and to share their emotions, needs or wishes. Pupils develop independence and life-skills to enable them to be healthy and safe. We teach pupils to value diversity, inclusion and consent, including how to seek help with any negative relationships or interaction they encounter. Awareness of key issues is raised across our community through events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Safer Internet Day and Mental Health Week.

If you have any concerns about the welfare of a pupil, please get in touch with one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads using this email address: safeguarding@southgateschool.

Operation Encompass

Our school is part of Operation Encompass.  This is a police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people who experience domestic abuse.  Operation Encompass means that the Education Safeguarding Service will share information about domestic incidents with our school prior to the start of the next school day when the police have been called to a domestic incident.
